Nessuno avrebbe potuto dirmelo, e se lo avessero fatto non gli avrei creduto, che sarei diventato uno scrittore, con quello che mi costava leggere da piccolo. Nonostante ciò, le circostanze mi avevano costretto a questa professione. poiché, con tutto il tempo che avevo adesso, rinchiuso per tutta la vita, non avevo molto altro da fare. E' vero che alcuni detenuti fanno esercizi nel cortile, o studiano anche in biblioteca, i più giovani frequentano corsi di formazione, ma tutti hanno qualcosa che io non ho, un ideale per cui lottare ed andare avanti. Con una condanna di pochi mesi o anni è facile pensare che la preparazione gli servirà per altro, e che sarà più facile guadagnarsi da vivere fuori da questo carcere. Ma nel mio caso, con la certezza che non sarò più libero di camminare per strada, che senso ha prepararsi? .
