This book is the English translation of Katha Upanishad by Swami Sarvananda, who was a disciple of Swami Brahmananda and one of the vice-presidents of the Ramakrishna Order. It contains original mantras, transliteration, construed text (anvaya) with a literal word by word meaning and overall English translation, with useful notes. The book also contains a useful introductory note on the Upanishad.

Swami Sarvananda (Also written as Sharvananda in some places – स्वमी शर्वानन्द) was born as Bhupendranath Mukhopadhyaya at Shantipur-Fulia in the district of Nadia (West Bengal) during Durga Puja 1885. He studied at Varanasi in Central Collegiate School, passed Entrance from Patna in 1899 and did his FA from Krishnanagar (West Bengal), BA from Queen’s College, Varanasi and MA in Philosophy from Allahabad University in 1905. He met Swami Vivekananda at Varanasi in 1902 and joined the Order at Belur Math in 1905.He was initiated by Swami Brahmanandaji and was named “Br Tejanarayana”. Then he was sent to Madras Math under Swami Ramakrishnananda. He was initiated into Brahmacharya in 1906 by Swami Ramakrishnanandaji. He was the first one in the Ramakrishna Order to be initiated into Brahmacharya. He began assisting the Editor of Brahmavadin (Prabuddha Bharata). He was initiated into Sannyasa by his guru and named Swami Sharvananda.He went on to become the President of Madras Math from 1911-26 as well as the first editor of Vedanta Kesari. He was a great orator and founder of many institutions of our order. He founded the Ramakrishna Society at Rangoon in 1916, established the centre at Mumbai in 1923, the Delhi centre in 1927, Colombo centre in 1930, as well as the Karachi Ashrama (now defunct). He started the Tamil journal “Ramakrishna Vijayam”.He became one of the Assistant Secretaries (1927) and subsequently one of the Vice-Presidents (1932) of the Ramakrishna Math and Mission. Some of the Upanishads are translated by him and are still being published by the Madras Math. Known as one of the greatest orators.Swami Sarvanandaji passed away in 1970.
