Die Winterschlacht in den Masuren entwickelte sich im Februar 1915 zu einer verheerenden Katastrophe für die russische Armee. Die Tage der Schlacht forderten über 70.000 Menschenleben auf beiden Seiten und vernichteten eine ganze russische Armee. Annähernd 100.000 russische Soldaten gerieten in Gefangenschaft. Den siegreichen Armeen Hindenburgs fielen in Folge ungeheure Mengen an Kriegsmaterial in die Hände.
