Il carcinoma di Merkel (CM) è un tumore cutaneo raro, aggressivo e con prognosi infausta. La diagnosi precoce è cruciale per un trattamento radicale, ma in molti casi i pazienti giungono all’osservazione già con metastasi linfonodali. La cellula di origine non è ancora stata identificata con certezza e, nonostante il nome della neoplasia, non vi sono dati certi che essa corrisponda alle cellule di Merkel. L’espressione di immunoglobuline a livello delle cellule tumorali e il riscontro di un riarrangiamento dei geni delle immunoglobuline hanno fatto suggerire che il CM possa derivare da precursori dei linfociti B.
