"The expedition of General Sullivan into the country of the Iroquois in 1779 is to many a somewhat unfamiliar chapter in the struggle for the independence of the American colonies. Although Washington himself, after careful investigation and the sanction of the Congress, approved of the invasion, to some the destruction of life and property has seemed to be almost wanton. Whether or not the claim is just, the fact still remains that the army of Sullivan did certain things which have become a part of our national history and therefore cannot be ignored. Whatever the justice or injustice of the deeds themselves, one lesson cannot fail to be learned from a study of the times, and that is a recognition of the need for sympathy, justice, and generosity in dealing with the Indian of today.
