Trotz der Steuererhöhung im Mai 2011 und der sie begleitenden Preiserhöhung brach die Zigarettennachfrage in Deutschland nicht ein. Der Tabakwarenabsatz stieg 2011 sogar das erste Mal seit Jahren wieder, wovon alle Hersteller profitierten. 2012 bereitete der Branche Kopfschmerzen, dass zum 1. Januar wieder eine Tabaksteuererhöhung anstand. Diese waren jedoch bisher unberechtigt, wie die Absatzzahlen des ersten Quartals 2012 zeigen. Sorge bereitet aber der Zigarettenschmuggel, der in Ostdeutschland gewaltige Dimensionen angenommen hat.
