Wieder klingelte es Sturm. Jeffrey Hoff stolperte durch den Flur. Er hatte sich vorgenommen, dem Störenfried ordentlich die Meinung zu geigen. Es war Sonntagmorgen, und er hasste es, um diese Zeit gestört zu werden. Mit hochrotem Kopf riss Hoff die Tür auf und erstarrte. Der Besucher hatte tief in den Höhlen liegende Augen. Sand und Wind hatten seine Haut gegerbt. Sie erinnerte an altes Pergament. "Wo ist das Amulett?", fragte der Fremde mit kratziger Stimme. "Ich weiß nicht, wovon Sie sprechen", erwiderte Hoff knapp. "Geben Sie es mir", forderte der Fremde, "sonst wird Menarkes Zorn über Sie kommen. Sie werden tausend Tode sterben!"
