Louis Untermeyer (1885 - 1977) was an American poet, anthologist, critic, and editor. He was born in New York City to German-Jewish parents. Untermeyer was the first to introduce the works of many then-unknown poets, including T. S. Eliot, Robert Frost, and Edna St. Vincent Millay, to the public. He was a prolific author of books of poetry, short stories, biographies, and criticism, as well as anthologies of verse. He was also an advocate for social justice and civil rights, and was a mentor to a number of young writers. He was a member of the National Institute of Arts and Letters and was awarded the Gold Medal of the National Institute of Arts and Letters for his contributions to poetry.
