NetBIOS (Network Basic Input / Output System) was originally developed by IBM. This is not a network protocol but API (Application Program Interface), which is used for communication between processes. NetBIOS was used by Microsoft in their NetBEUI protocol (currently not in use). NetBEUI was a simple and efficient protocol that was providing automatic configuration and tuning of the network parameters. However, this protocol does not provide routing, which finally killed its use in larger networks. Since the TCP/IP stack is the winner in the arena of network , NetBIOS has been adapted to local transport (encapsulatio - NetBIOS over TCP/IP).
