Vom 9. bis 11. September 2009 tagte das vom Weltwirtschaftsinstitut (IfW) in Kiel 2008 gegründete „Global Economic Symposium (GES)“ im Plöner Schloss. Im Ökumeneausschuss des Kirchenkreises wurde der Plan entwickelt, zum gleichen Termin und mit der gleichen Thematik wie im Plöner Schloss, ganz in der Nähe, nur etwa 500 Meter von Kirche und Gemeindehaus der Kirchengemeinde Plön entfernt, eine Veranstaltung durchuzuführen. Daraus entwickelte sich der Gedanke, nicht nur eine Veranstaltung zu planen, sondern einen Kirchentag des Kirchenkreises, einen Politischen Kirchentag.
