Ponniyin Selvan: First Flood is the first volume of the epic historical novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy, which narrates the story of the Chola prince Arulmozhivarman, who later became the great king Rajaraja Chola I. The novel is set in the 10th century CE, when the Chola empire was facing threats from the Pallavas, the Pandyas, and the Sinhalese. The novel begins with the adventurous journey of Vallavarayan Vandiyadevan, a young and brave warrior, who is sent by the crown prince Aditya Karikalan to deliver a secret message to his father, the emperor Sundara Chola. On his way, he encounters various characters, such as the beautiful princess Kundavai, the mysterious Nandini, the loyal Periya Pazhuvettarayar, the cunning Chinna Pazhuvettarayar, the wise Azhwarkadiyan, the brave Parthibendran, and the enigmatic Madhuranthakan. He also uncovers a sinister plot to overthrow the Chola throne and faces many dangers and challenges. The novel is full of adventure, intrigue, romance, and humor, and depicts the rich culture and history of the Chola period.
