OLED steht für „Organic Light Emitting Diode“ (organische Leuchtdioden). Derzeit werden OLED-Displays hauptsächlich als kleinformatige Displays in Handys, MP3-Playern oder Autoradios eingesetzt. Im Jahr 2005 wurden rund 63 Millionen OLED-Displays produziert, was einem Wachstum von 96 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr entspricht. Im Jahr 2005 war der weltweite OLED-Markt ca. 500 Millionen US-Dollar groß und soll bis zum Jahr 2009 auf über fünf Milliarden US-Dollar angewachsen sein. (6) , (13) Bis auch großformatige Displays wie z.B. bei Computer- oder Fernsehbildschirmen mit der OLED-Technologie ausgestattet werden können, wird es noch eine Weile dauern.
