This is the sequel to MURDER IN THE MIST. Although second in the series, it is easily read as a stand alone. Laura Friday is an investigative reporter on assignment in El Paso, Texas. She has changed her name and moved from her home in Maine along with her Aunt. She meets up again with Sheriff Mitch Carter, who was once a deputy in Laura's hometown in Maine. She has no intention of acting on her attraction for the Sheriff, for her own reasons, but when her Aunt is violently attacked in her hotel room and then the discovery of a headless corpse, she feels she has no choice. The two crimes may or may not be connected, but Laura wonders if this was a message for her specifically. Throw in a couple of warring drug cartels, and the mystery only deepens. This is an action-packed page-turner creating chills and thrills for Laura and Mitch, especially when they have to deal with a stone-cold assassin who likes his job. With a little romance thrown in, this well written story leads to a very satisfactory ending.
