About this ebook

Drug or some other poisoning is the most common cause of unconsciousness in a previously healthy (especially young) person, if asymmetry is not observed on neurological examination. The treatment is classified in the following manner: Immediate action (Figure) Prevention of absorption of orally taken drugs Other specific therapy (antidotes and dialysis) Follow-up treatment (finding out the cause of poisoning, psychiatric treatment). Risk assessment in based on the amount of drug taken and the time that has elapsed since. The patient may be momentarily misleadingly fit. The history of the ingested amount of drug is often erroneous. In most cases the poisoning results from a mixture of alcohol and several drugs, and the typical symptoms (table ) may be absent.
