The cover looks similar to "First Landing," Zubrin's light-hearted fictional account of a Mars Direct style mission, but the content owes essentially everything to another Zubrin book "How to Live on Mars." Yes, only one word different in the title. Petranek's book name drops a few recent robotic missions, while Zubrin's is much more amusing, better written, better fact checked, and more politically adept. There is space for a Mars living manual less partisan and idealistic than Zubrin's: this is not it.

If you enjoy watching the series "MARS" that's on National Geographic, you'll enjoy this book on which the series is loosely based. It's a quick read, but covers a lot of ground on the history of Mars exploration, where we are today, and the challenges that await.
