The stock market takes a tremendous fall causing extensive inflation and making paper money useless.
One super inflation takes hold there was rioting and looting and only those who have planned in advance will be able to survive. The infrastructure of society is disolved, gas stations run out of gas and the high teck gadgets that we're used to are wothtless without electricity.
Those who can trade food or other materials such as gold are able to purchawe the necessary items for surivial.
Andy Laine and his family are in the group that seems made up of current and former military people with a strong faith. They have stockpiled canned goods, weapons, they have water and a source of energy.
With the dregs of society such as paroled convicts or gang members joining the looters, I was reminded of "The Stand" by Stephen King, where the forces of good face those of evil in the battle of the world.
The story moves between different groups as suspense builds. I was interested in the outcome but felt that some of the concepts were too extreme.

If you want a well thought out story, followed to a nice ending that wraps up the entire story - then dont bother with this one.
James starts out his story by going in to a lot of detail about the characters and the world situation in the first half or so of the book. But then it seems he must have realized that his story was getting too long and abandoned telling the story and just went for wrapping up each characters story rather bluntly. Several of the last "Chapters" were only 1-2 pages long. He builds up to this big climax, then finishes the whole thing off in a matter of pages, never really telling the story.
The book got off to a great start, but ended miserably in what appeared to me as being in a rush to just end the story as best he could, without actually telling the story. Very disappointed.

I believe it. I surely do believe it. It's a great tale of all that could go wrong - and probably will. If you can't prepare yourself for a year or more, prepare yourself for a short time. Only a fool wouldn't already be trying to tend to their own needs. Nice story.
