जीवत्सु तातपादेषु नवेदारपरिग्रहे । मातृभिश्चिन्त्यमानानां ते हि नो दिवसा गता: ।- भवभूती (उत्तररामचरित्र) मी चाळिशीच्या घरात आलो, तेव्हा हा श्लोक जितका काव्यात्म, तितकाच वास्तव आहे, याची तीव्र जाणीव मला झाली. बालपणीच्या आणि मारवयातल्या अनेक आठवणी या ना त्या कारणाने माझ्या मनात जाग्या होऊ लागल्या. हुरहुर लावून जाऊ लागल्या... दैव, व्यक्तित्व आणि परिस्थिती या तिन्हींच्या क्रिया-प्रक्रियांतून माणसाचे जीवन कसे घडविले जाते, हे अंधुकपणे का होईना, या आठवणींमुळे कळू लागते. मग जीवनाच्या कोड्याविषयी अधिक अचंबा वाटतो !. जीवन म्हणजे काय, या प्रश्नाचे उत्तर आपण शोधू लागतो. असंख्य विसंगतींच्या सागरातून मध्येच डोके वर करून पाहणारे एक बेट, एवढाच त्याचा अर्थ आहे, हे आपल्याला कळून चुकते !
Nearing forties I realised that this shloka is not only rhythmic and poetic but is very realistic. My mind often wonders into those days of my childhood and teenage making me anxious tremulously. They make me realise my making as a man through the interactions between luck, personality and situation- and then leave me wondering. We always try to find out the answer for what is life? At the end, we come to the conclusion that life is a small island peeping out of an ocean of various controversies.
