I have asked permission to dedicate this book to you not only in memory of the happy evenings I have spent with you in Saigon over the last five years, but also because I have quite shamelessly borrowed the location of your flat to house one of my characters, and your name, Phuong, for the convenience of readers because it is simple, beautiful and easy to pronounce, which is not true of all your country- women’s names. You will both realise I have borrowed little else, certainly not the characters of anyone in Viet Nam.
Pyle, Granger, Fowler, Vigot, Joe— these have had no originals in the life of Saigon or Hanoi, and General The is dead: shot in the back, so they say. Even the historical events have been rearranged. For example, the big bomb near the Continental preceded and did not follow the bicycle bombs. I have no scruples about such small changes. This is a story and not a piece of history, and I hope that as a story about a few imaginary characters it will pass for both of you one hot Saigon evening.

Graham Greene, born on October 2, 1904, in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England, was an acclaimed English author and playwright. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, known for his literary achievements and his exploration of moral and political themes in his works. Greene's writing career began in the 1920s when he worked as a sub-editor for The Times. However, it was his first published novel, "The Man Within" (1929), that gained him recognition as a promising literary talent. Throughout his prolific career, Greene went on to write numerous novels, short stories, plays, and screenplays. One of Greene's notable achievements was his ability to seamlessly blend different genres, including spy fiction, thriller, and literary fiction. His works often delved into complex moral and ethical dilemmas, reflecting his deep understanding of human nature and the societal issues of his time. Among his most celebrated novels is "The Power and the Glory" (1940), which explores themes of faith, sin, and redemption through the story of a whisky priest hunted down during the anti-Catholic persecution in Mexico. The novel's poignant exploration of religious beliefs and the struggle for spiritual salvation garnered critical acclaim and established Greene as a masterful storyteller. Greene's other significant works include "Brighton Rock" (1938), "The Heart of the Matter" (1948), and "The End of the Affair" (1951), each showcasing his exceptional skill in creating compelling narratives with deeply flawed and morally conflicted characters. In addition to his novels, Greene's screenplays were highly regarded, particularly his adaptation of the novel "The Third Man" (1949) into a screenplay. The film, directed by Carol Reed and starring Orson Welles, became a cinematic classic, earning Greene an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Throughout his career, Greene received numerous accolades and honors for his contributions to literature. In 1967, he was awarded the Order of Merit, one of the highest honors bestowed upon individuals in the United Kingdom, for his exceptional literary achievements. Graham Greene's impact on literature and his ability to tackle profound moral and political questions through his writing have left an indelible mark. His works continue to captivate readers with their insightful examinations of human nature and their exploration of the complexities of personal and social conscience.
