A pivotal figure in San Francisco's literary and artistic scene at the turn of the 20th century, Burgess contributed to the development of whimsical and bohemian aspects in American literature. Trained as an engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he took a detour into the arts, employing his wit and talents throughout various creative endeavors.
