About this ebook

For both Zane and Darby, their small town roots hold a terrible secret. Now, decades later, they've come together to build a new life. But will the past set them free or pull them under?

Zane Bigelow grew up in a beautiful, perfectly kept house in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Strangers and even Zane’s own aunt across the lake see his parents as a successful surgeon and his stylish wife, making appearances at their children’s ballet recitals and baseball games. Only Zane and his sister know the truth, until one brutal night finally reveals cracks in the facade, and Zane escapes for college without a thought of looking back...

Years later, Zane returns to his hometown determined to reconnect with the place and people that mean so much to him, despite the painful memories. As he resumes life in the colorful town, he meets a gifted landscape artist named Darby, who is on the run from ghosts of her own.

Together they will have to teach each other what it means to face the past, and stand up for the ones they love.

Never in my life been so eager to just get a book over and done with. This was my first NR and will probably be my last seeing as how most of the reviews on this claim it to be her "best book yet". I don't know if it was just this book or a consistent thing with the author but I can't stand how often she has characters repeating words back to back. Why is Darby kissing literally everyone on the mouth!? I found the dialogue to be paaainfully cringey. I feel like someone put the words "mystery, romance, the south" into an AI generator and out popped whatever this is. This entire thing read like a very, very poorly written and super corny Lifetime movie.

This book brought up a lot of old scars from my past. I could relate to the fear of the children. As a former battered woman, I understood so much of the whole book!! It was so wonderfully written. The talk of safe houses brought memories flooding back. I am a survivor and have felt many feelings that Nora Robert's described so well

I have read most of Nora Toberts books.. this is one of the best I've read of hers in a while. The violence is a little uncomfortable. As the stories go and entwined with other characters it becomes a good read about how different people deal with abuse and how a support system is needed no matter what. How you can't do it alone. Dont think you can rush through this book it does take some time.
