Writing has been a pivotal tool in my personal journey of growth and self-discovery. After 21 years of military service, I entered retirement searching for greater meaning and purpose. I turned to writing as an emotional release and creative outlet. The more I wrote, the more therapeutic it became, providing clarity amidst my swirling thoughts.
In time, my writing evoked deeper questions about faith and God. Nightly bible study stirred an internal quest for wisdom, embodied in the verse “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10). I pondered the true meaning of “fear” and other probing questions through writing’s lens of introspection. As I unpacked the definitions layer by layer, I gained sudden insight into the importance of grasping the full essence of words, actions, and intentions.
But at first, I was lost in ignorance. When I read “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,” I scratched my head in utter bewilderment. “What does that even mean?” I thought out loud, perplexed. I knew nothing of fearing the Lord. The verse evoked no wisdom, only confusion in my spiritually inexperienced mind. I was desperate for understanding - grasping at straws, probing dictionaries for clues. My bewildered questions propelled me to dig deeper, write more fervently, unlock the mysteries I did not comprehend.
This epiphany sparked a new approach to writing and life. I now aimed to understand meanings to their core and align my outward actions with inner values. My writing became focused on excavating truth. I reviewed past relationships and events under this new light, from childhood to marriage. Difficult emotions arose - guilt, grief, remorse - yet writing helped channel them into constructive self-examination.
Through pouring my unfiltered thoughts onto paper, I confronted my shadows and brought concealed shortcomings into the light. The process was often painful but necessary for growth. I gained hard-won wisdom about my identity and purpose. Writing became the winding path to assemble the fragmented pieces of my life into an integrated whole.
Now my goal is paying forward these lessons through writing that inspires others towards self-discovery. My parents gave me little structure growing up. Only in adulthood did I recognize the importance of cultivating personal meaning. The void I long felt has found its cure - helping others avoid unnecessary suffering by illuminating their own path to fulfillment.
Writing remains my constant companion on this ever-unfolding journey. Even when the course ahead seems uncertain, I can rely on writing to process new insights, find direction, and chart progress. It gifts me a compass to navigate life’s complex landscape. One line at a time, I am writing myself into wholeness.
