During 50 years of nuclear weapons production, the U.S. has generated large volumes of radioactive wastes that have resulted in the contamination of soil, groundwater, & surface water. As a result, (in 1994) DoE faces a massive, complex, & costly cleanup effort. The U.S. will decide on methods to be used for environ. remediation at various sites. This report reviews progress in determining cleanup standards & land uses. It determines: how cleanup levels are currently determined for sites; the status & likelihood of success of efforts to develop cleanup standards for radionuclides; the status of land use planning efforts; & what hurdles would need to be overcome if land use planning were to be effectively implemented.
