Er war das zweite von acht Kindern von John Dickens (1786–1851), einem Büroangestellten im Navy Pay Office in Portsmouth, und seiner Frau Elizabeth (geb. Barrow, 1789–1863). Als Charles fünf Jahre alt war, zog die Familie nach Chatham in Kent um. 1822 ließ sich die Familie Dickens in 16 Bayham Street, Camden Town, in London nieder, da der Vater beruflich versetzt worden war.
