About this ebook

A world-shaping event revives old favorites, introduces new complications—and moves hero Drizzt Do'Urden into a restored era of the Forgotten Realms

Alone and with his fate hanging in the balance, Drizzt Do'Urden reflects on the lives of the trusted allies who stood by his side throughout his early life—the friends now known as the Companions of the Hall. Unbeknownst to him, the goddess Mielikki has given Bruenor, Catti-brie, Regis, and Wulfgar the chance to return to the world they left behind. Reborn as children but with their memories still intact, the friends must find a way back to one another—and to their lone Companion, Drizzt.

Meanwhile, three seemingly unrelated commoners, growing up across the far reaches of the Forgotten Realms, display incredible feats of power. Against all odds, they hold the fate of Drizzt Do'Urden in their hands—a fate that is far from certain. For in the shadows, a cunning cabal of wizards is watching, intent on hunting the "Chosen" mortals who have been blessed by the gods. These wizards know something mere commoners do not: Long-forgotten gods have begun to stir. Long-lost lands have begun to tremble. The world around them is about to change—and these wizards will do whatever it takes to turn the coming chaos to their advantage.

The Companions is the first book in the Sundering series and the twenty-seventh book in the Legend of Drizzt series.

I have not been much impressed with many of the novels during the "Era of Upheaval" from the Forgotten Realms line. There have been some good ones, like the Shadowbane stories by Erik Scott de Bie, but R.A. Salvatore's Legend of Drizzt has always been my home in the Realms. That line has grown darker with every novel and now steps back into the light with The Companions. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel from cover to cover. Once you wrap your head around the dates and how it tends to skip back and forth chronologically, the story flows quite well and we get an expected surprise at the end of the novel. If you'd thought of giving up on Drizzt, I highly recommended finishing your reading list in order and get to the Companions as quickly as you can. You will not be disappointed with the coming of the new Realms. I finished it in less than 24 hours. I just could not stop reading.

I gave up on the Drizzt books back in high school after The Thousand Orcs. Mainly because the characters were so overpowered, the stories no longer "epic" for their status, and things had become rather clichéd. After missing out on the more recent books due to lack of interest I decided to give this a shot and found a really fun read. Focusing more on the companions than the dark elf himself was a great choice. I don't want to give away too much, but this is a great (nearly) self-contained story that any fantasy or fiction fan in general will enjoy. With or without knowledge of the extensive back story.

May be his best work yet. Its amazing how attached and emotionally vested you become with his characters. I was left giddy by the implications of what the future will bring and sad that I couldn't read on to the next exciting tale.

About the author

R.A. Salvatore was born in Massachusetts in 1959. He is the New York Times–bestselling author of more than forty novels, including the popular Forgotten Realms series, The Legend of Drizzt. His love affair with fantasy, and with literature in general, began during his sophomore year of college when he was given a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings as a Christmas gift. He promptly changed his major from computer science to journalism. He began writing seriously in 1982, penning the manuscript that would become Echoes of the Fourth Magic.

His first published novel was The Crystal Shard from TSR in 1988, and his novel The Silent Bladewon the Origins Award. He is still best known as the creator of dark elf Drizzt Do’Urden, one of fantasy’s most beloved characters.
