रामदेव अग्रवाल का जन्म एक मध्यमवर्गीय मारवाड़ी परिवार में हुआ। उनके पूर्वज राजस्थान के हैं। उनका पालन-पोषण छत्तीसगढ़ के एक गाँव में हुआ जहाँ बिजली और अच्छी सड़कें भी नहीं थीं। नियमित शिक्षा पूरी करने के बाद, उन्होंने मुंबई में आकर चार्टर्ड अकाउंटेंसी की पढ़ाई की। चार्टर्ड अकाउंटेंसी के पूरा होने में पाँच साल लग गए। शेयर बाजार निवेश में अग्रवाल को आरंभ से ही काफी रुचि थी और वे उसी में अपना कॅरियर बनाना चाहते थे, पर उन्हें कोई अवसर नहीं मिल रहा था।
उनके पास निवेश करने का ज्ञान तो था, पर न कोई जमापूँजी थी और न ही कोई ग्राहक। ऐसे ही समय में अध्ययन के दौरान उनकी मुलाकात मोतीलाल ओसवाल से हुई। पढ़ाई पूरी होने के बाद उन्होंने उनके साथ पार्टनरशिप में स्टॉक मार्केट में प्रवेश करने का फैसला किया और सन् 1987 में ‘मोतीलाल ओसवाल सब-ब्रोकिंग फर्म’ की स्थापना की। धीरे-धीरे यह सब-ब्रोकिंग फर्म एक बड़ी वित्तीय सेवा प्रदान करनेवाली कंपनी बन गई।
