About this ebook

In Tides: The Science and Spirit of the Ocean, writer, sailor, and surfer Jonathan White takes readers across the globe to discover the science and spirit of ocean tides. In the Arctic, White shimmies under the ice with an Inuit elder to hunt for mussels in the dark cavities left behind at low tide; in China, he races the Silver Dragon, a twenty-five-foot tidal bore that crashes eighty miles up the Qiantang River; in France, he interviews the monks that live in the tide-wrapped monastery of Mont Saint-Michel; in Chile and Scotland, he investigates the growth of tidal power generation; and in Panama and Venice, he delves into how the threat of sea level rise is changing human culture—the very old and very new. Tides combines lyrical prose, colorful adventure travel, and provocative scientific inquiry into the elemental, mysterious paradox that keeps our planet’s waters in constant motion. Photographs, scientific figures, line drawings, and sixteen color photos dramatically illustrate this engaging, expert tour of the tides.

If you have lived near or by oceans and other bodies of water and wondered about tides this may be a good book to read. I've found myself going back to many times I've sat by the sea watching the tide and wondered things like sea level between Maine and Alaska or what happens in Penobscot Bay at the "chops" or leaving Prince William Sound ( neither of which are specificly mentioned but other examples are given). Book is balanced with reviews of western and eastern continents tides in a manner that makes a link between tides and their effects on culture. For every question I had on tides the books points out 20 points my feeble mind never attempted to figure out or even hypothesized. All done within a history of world history and scientific discovery. Recommend for all professional and amateur open fresh and salt water boaters, science historians, climatologist, planetologist and anybody who spent time watching the tide. Review written at 3 am near the shore of Cook Inlet. Thank you Nancy Lord for your published review and Gail and Laura for both thinking of me when you both read Tides. Yes I've worked in Edmundston NB Canada. You need to read the book to see why this small non tidal community starts this book. . Need to buy a paper copy of this book now.
