About the author

Jeff Hecht has written about fiber optics for over 30 years. Trained as an electronic engineer at Caltech, he is a contributing editor to Laser Focus World, and writes frequently for other publications including New ScientistIEEE Spectrum, and Optics & Photonics News. His other books include Understanding Lasers: An Entry-Level Guide, The Laser Guidebook, City of Light: The Story of Fiber Optics, and Optics: Light for a New Age. He is a senior member of the Optical Society of America, a life member of IEEE, and also belongs to the American Physical Society and the National Association of Science writers.
