Reineke Fuchs ist ein Epos in zwölf Gesängen von Johann Wolfgang Goethe. 1793 entstanden, lag es im Mai 1794 im Erstdruck vor. Den Stoff vom Reineke Fuchs bezog Goethe aus der von Johann Christoph Gottsched 1752 besorgten Prosabearbeitung eines seit 1498 zunächst in niederdeutscher Form erschienenen und durchgehend erfolgreichen Versepos vom Reynke de vos. Goethe wählte - durchaus im Wettstreit mit dem darin erfolgreichen Johann Heinrich Voß - als Versform durchgehend den Hexameter. Er gab dem Werk stark spöttische, mitunter boshafte Züge; sein Epos kann durchaus auch als Kritik des höfischen Lebens gelesen werden, das er gut kannte. (aus wikipedia.de)
