These two finally connect more deeply in the way I was craving in book one, but there's a lot to untangle! Mason is the character triumph of this story. Alaphahole, ruthless, punishing and cunning- but Amelia gives him dimension immediately. Brilliantly juxtaposing Charlotte’s Mason with the Mason that is the caregiver and loving patriarch of his family of younger siblings. So we find empathy with him straight away- we see the full depths of his coldness, but we’re also hugged by his warmth. And soon that warmth starts to bleed into his complicated dynamic with Charlotte, as his punishing urges come less out of malice and more out of desire and connection. He’s a magnetic mix of cold dominance and alpha tenderness- and unlike some of Amelia’s other heroes, we get some softness in him straight away. He’s truly an intriguing hero, and I loved being in his head. Charlotte is a character I feel like we know a bit less- she’s so consumed by her family troubles as well as her arrangement with Mason. But, there is a kindness and generosity to her that makes her very compelling, that makes me excited to know her more. And she has a quiet strength that is admirable- she shows compassion for people who genuinely don’t deserve it from her, like Mason- and that is because she has a character integrity I’m looking forward to unpacking more. And I loved her internal struggle she has.

I really like this series. But, I'm not understanding why no one is dealing with the tragedy in the plot. So far, I'm not digging Charlotte's loyalty to her parents. i guess the focus is on Charlotte's relationship with Mason. It's a very sexy read, not a traditional sex read.
