સ્વામી વિવેકાનંદનો જન્મ કોલકાતાના સિમુલિયા વિસ્તારમાં ૧૨ જાન્યુઆરી, ૧૮૬૩ના રોજ થયો હતો. તેઓ ભગવાન શ્રીરામકૃષ્ણદેવના ૧૬ સંન્યાસી શિષ્યોમાં પટ્ટશિષ્ય હતા.
ઈ.સ. ૧૮૮૬માં શ્રીરામકૃષ્ણની મહાસમાધિના થોડા સમય બાદ તેમણે વરાહનગરમાં સૌ પ્રથમ મઠનો પ્રારંભ કર્યો. ૧૮૮૮ થી ૯૨ સુધી ભારતભ્રમણ બાદ ૧૮૯૩માં શિકાગો ધર્મપરિષદમાં ભાગ લેવા ગયા.
