It was pretty good until I unexpectedly hit the paywall at level 5, after having only learned a few basic sentences. Edit to respond to the developer: I appreciate that development takes money. But since some features of the app were already paid-only (and I had accepted I wouldn't have access to those features), I wasn't expecting a point in the learning path where I was completely stopped from taking the basic lessons without paying, let alone that it came so early in the lessons.

I first downloaded this 10 years ago and went back to it today after I became frustrated with duolingo. It's changed alot, obviously "borrowing" UI and methods from duolingo, which are the good parts. However, Hello Chinese is way more effective at teaching the language. It takes time to explain the foundation of what you are learning, lessons are more cohesive, native speakers are used to teach pronunciation. It is better in almost every way, even for the free version. I will likely upgrade

I find the lessons more better taught than in Duolingo though a little short. That just makes me complete more lessons though. The additional learning content is awesome as I get to learn about the culture and the actual way the language is spoken/used. However, I've only just started and I'm a beginner in Mandarin so I can't say about the further levels.
