About this app

MyShake is a comprehensive and free earthquake app offering these features:

Earthquake Early Warning
Receive timely, potentially life-saving early warning alerts in California, Oregon and Washington. MyShake uses the USGS ShakeAlert system to deliver alerts for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 (or greater) several seconds before shaking arrives.

Earthquake Safety
View safety tips for earthquake preparedness such as securing hazardous or moveable items and creating a disaster plan. Know what to do during an earthquake and learn more about Drop, Cover and Hold On!

Earthquake Map
View and explore a map of earthquakes around the world and get detailed information such as earthquake magnitude, location and depth. Share your own experience of an earthquake and see community reports of shaking and damage.

Earthquake Notification
Stay informed of earthquakes as they occur by receiving notifications on your phone. Select your regions of interest and the earthquake magnitude. You’ll never miss out on any earthquake greater than magnitude 3.5!

Smartphone-Based Global Seismic Network
Participate in a smartphone-based global seismic network. In this research project, your phone becomes a mini-seismometer and contributes to the detection of earthquakes wherever you are. This global citizen-science based seismic network has the potential to provide early warning earthquake alerts in every region of the world, even in the absence of traditional seismic networks!

About Us
MyShake is developed by the University of California, Berkeley, Seismology Lab and funded by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. The Berkeley Seismology Lab conducts essential research on earthquakes and solid earth processes while collecting and delivering high quality geophysical data.

MyShake is available in English, Spanish (Español), Chinese Traditional (繁體中文), Filipino, Korean (한국인), and Vietnamese (Tiếng Việt).

MyShake is available to everyone for free with no ads and no subscriptions!

Taking stars off; Installed 3.0. No quake info when using WiFi on phone. Works great with LTE. In fact with WiFi, I switched over to list mode (I like that feature), it started using power faster than the connected charger could fast charge my phone. Essentially, the lack of WiFi capability severely limits this app's utility to me since I spend much of the day in an office with my phone connected via WiFi. I don't like the orange blobs if they are all the same size and intensity. There is not way to tell recency or size for the most part. The list function helps, but the blob size is somewhat irrelevant since it doesn't add any information to the list or map views.

Hi Michael, we are very sorry that you are not happy with the app. The WiFi should not be holding back the app's functionality but we'd be more than happy to troubleshoot this further, please email us at myshake-info@berkeley.edu. Also, if there is another aspect of the app that you think could be improved, we would be happy to hear your feedback.

Count me as one who doesn't like the new visual display. The old relatively minor circle size differential was good enough for me as indicator, & made it easy to find new sign. quakes. Opaque circles in new ver are impossible to distinguish on the map w/o zoom. While default display of magnitudes is nice in theory, old version was responsive and quick if you were curious about particular quakes. IMO, this version's display seems mushy and blurry. Maybe a toggle allowing display types to shift?

Hi Jeff, we are sorry that you haven't enjoyed the redesign. Through previous testing, we found that many supported this current visual map view but we do appreciate your feedback and are always looking to improve the user experience. Thank you for your detailed feedback, we've noted this and plan to incorporate all feedback as best as possible.

It used to be an awesome app for great info about earthquakes. I recommended it to my coworkers and sisters now with the update it is so frustrating trying to check for the map those blurred yellow circles and the lack of color on the map are terrible. I still have the old version on my tablet and I hope I can keep it with not up date. I will erase it from my phone.

Hi Maria, we are sorry that the new app still has some design challenges to work through. We did many rounds of user testing to design the new app, but have realized that more users are looking for something a bit different. On a positive note, we have heard your concerns and have noted them down to improve the app and your experience. Thank you!
