Roadglass is a GPS speedometer with a HUD mode and a trip meter. It works with no connection and no account, and it keeps nothing about where you went: your trips are kept on your phone as numbers, never as places. It needs the internet only for ads.
★ YOUR SPEED, FROM GPS
Large digits in km/h, mph or knots, chosen from the country your phone is in until you pick one. Roadglass says Waiting for GPS until it has a usable fix. When the signal drops, in a tunnel or under a bridge, the last reading turns hollow and shows how old it is, and after ten seconds it is taken away instead of being left on screen as if it were current. At a standstill it reads 0, not a jittery 1 or 2.
★ HUD MODE FOR YOUR WINDSCREEN
Only the speed and its unit, as large as your screen allows, on black. Turn on mirroring and the reflection in your windscreen reads the right way round. The screen stays on, and a stray touch cannot close it: leaving takes a two-second hold.
★ TRIP METER
Start, pause and finish a trip to see its distance, moving time, average moving speed and top speed. Finishing takes a one-second hold, so a bump in the road cannot end a trip. Finished trips are kept in Your trips with the total of all of them, like an odometer for the trips you record, and you can save the list as a CSV file.
★ SPEED ALERT
Off until you turn it on. Above the limit you choose, the speed gets a frame and changes colour, and your phone can buzz once as you go over.
★ WHAT STAYS ON YOUR PHONE
- Location is used only while the speedometer, HUD mode or a trip you just finished is on screen, never in the background, and only to work out speed and distance.
- No position is stored, shown on a map, exported or sent anywhere. A trip is kept as its date, its times, its distance and its speeds.
- There is no account and nothing to sign in to. Android's backup of the app's data is switched off, so a new phone starts with no trips.
★ WHAT LEAVES YOUR PHONE: ONLY THE ADS
Ads are shown by Google's ads software, which receives your phone's advertising ID, an approximate location from its internet address and how ads are seen. Roadglass never gives it your speed, your trips or your location. An ad is only ever shown as you close a trip you have just finished, with the phone standing still, never on the speedometer and never in HUD mode. Watch a short video in Settings to turn ads off for a day.
★ SAFETY FIRST
Set Roadglass up before you drive, and never handle your phone while driving. Use HUD mode or a holder, and let a passenger handle the phone.
★ WHAT IT DOES NOT DO
No maps, no routes, no speed cameras and no speed limits of its own: the alert's limit is the one you choose.
Roadglass is not a certified speedometer or speed-measuring instrument. GPS speed is an estimate: it lags behind your real speed, drops out in tunnels and under bridges, and can be wrong when the signal is weak. Do not rely on it for any legal purpose or in place of your vehicle's own speedometer.
