About this game

TILES THAT CHANGE WITH THE BRANCH
On the trunk they are the kanji of mahjong: bamboos, characters, circles, winds, dragons. One branch further on, the same suits become fruit. Another, animals. This is not a skin you pick from a menu: the map decides, and you meet the new tile set on arrival. Further still: sweets, flowers, vegetables, tropical fruit — seven tile sets in all.

A castaway, an island under fog, and mahjong tiles stacked several storeys high. Mahjong: Mystery Island is a free matching game where every board you clear uncovers a piece of the map.

FREE MEANS TWO THINGS
A tile can be taken if nothing sits on top of it AND its left or right side is clear. Both halves count: a tile wedged between two neighbours is stuck even if nothing covers it. From three storeys up, the ones that are not free dim down — the information was already on screen, we only save you the squinting.

FLOWERS WITH FLOWERS, SEASONS WITH SEASONS
The four flowers match freely within their group, and so do the four seasons. That is the real rule, the one players know, not a simplification.

200 BOARDS, NONE IMPOSSIBLE
A board filled at random is unplayable half the time: the two tiles of a pair end up one on top of the other and nothing moves again. That is the flaw in most mahjong games on sale. Ours are built backwards — the empty layout is taken apart before the pairs are poured in — then replayed one by one before they ship. You will never lose to bad luck.

FROM TWELVE TILES TO A HUNDRED AND EIGHT
The first board has twelve, on a single storey. Depth arrives on the second. Then it climbs: a tray, a pyramid, a wall, a bridge, a tower, a temple, and a great bridge four storeys tall. We do not serve you a hundred and forty-four tiles on a phone screen: at that size, a tile ends up smaller than a finger.

TWO BUTTONS, AND WHAT THEY COST
Show a playable pair: 50 tokens. Shuffle what is left when nothing matches any more: 20 tokens.

THE FOG PULLS BACK
The map sleeps under the mist. Every board you clear pushes it back a little, and it is the map that decides which tiles you will see next. Between boards the island offers something else: short mini-games that pay in tokens.

• Seven tile sets: kanji, fruit, animals, flowers, sweets, vegetables, tropical fruit
• 200 boards checked solvable before release
• From 12 to 108 tiles, from one to four storeys
• A daily challenge, a fresh board every day
• No connection needed: everything plays offline
• Mini-games between boards, and tokens to spend
• A notebook that gains a page at every step

Put a finger on two identical bamboos. The fog starts to move.
Kanji, fruit, animals, flowers, sweets: seven tile sets in all.
