About this app

The Alerus Retirement mobile app allows participants of Alerus employer-sponsored plans to receive fast, free, and secure access to their account information. Access your account using your existing online username and password. Participants can receive important alerts, check balances, view investment performance graphs, and review contributions. The app allows for quick access to review investment information, monitor loan data (if applicable), see personal rates of return, and confirm contact details.

For users wanting to dig deeper, it is easy to access account activity details, check investment allocation, and review contribution totals. When changes are needed, the app provides secure access to perform transfers, make allocation changes, or download account statements.

The app is not functional. Logging in for the first time gives a notice that you must approve mobile login by going on a desktop PC, logging into your account, and going to "Manage Devices". Only problem is that there is no such page on the portal (at least not the version of the portal I get when I login). I have throughly clicked through to every single section of the site and there is no "Manages Devices" page to be found. As a result, it is impossible to login to the app, making it useless.

I thought I would give the mobile app a try because the Alerus Retirement website is so terrible on mobile. Unfortunately, the app requires me to register my phone somehow, somewhere on that terrible website. This is the website which won't even show you the menu on a typical phone. It's 3/4 of the way offscreen. Even if you do find your way into your profile, there's nothing mentioned about registering mobile devices. I give up. This company is a disaster from a user experience perspective.

To get past the "Managed Devices" prompt, log into Alerus Retirement from a computer and select Summary. Under Alerts, look for the "Managed Devices" alert and click the link. Select the check box next to the device you tried to log in on and click the button. Overall the app is just okay. It allows you to view data albeit it takes a while to load. I had to close it and reload for data to refresh. You cannot change your contributions or investments through the app.

What’s new

As part of our continuing efforts to provide the best protection for our participants, this App 5.1 update provides the same enhanced multi-factor authentication as our website. On the initial log-in, the multi-factor authentication uses the same email address and phone number as your website account to provide you with a verification PIN. Once the authentication is completed successfully, you can request the app to “remember” you and enable facial recognition for expedited logon thereafter.
