You work the door of a basement club that should probably not be open. Bouncer is a generous word for it. The card in your pocket says who gets in tonight, and everyone coming up the steps has a reason to be let in. Some of the reasons are true.
A night takes about three minutes. Read tonight's card, then take the queue one person at a time: swipe right to let them in, left to send them home. Hold a card down to look at the ID properly - the name, the date, the photo, and the face standing in front of you. The shutter comes down at three. Then the morning shows you the room you made, the takings, and a note from the owner about it.
- A different card every night, so the right answer changes every night
- Over 60,000 distinct faces, and nobody turns up twice in one night
- A forged ID always leaves something on the front, if you actually look
- One thing goes wrong a night: an argument, a bribe, a name from the owner, an inspector at the door
- Three strikes on the licence and there is no club to work at
- Four things worth spending the takings on, and a book of twenty goals
- Some of the goals are not listed until you find them
- Every person you turn away is photographed and kept
Turn away the wrong person and it costs money. Let in the wrong person and it costs the licence. The takings have to cover the overhead, the overhead climbs as the room fills, and sixty nights is a long time to keep a clean sheet. If you liked Papers, Please, this is that shape of decision on a phone, in the time it takes to wait for a bus.
