The Economist is a great publication. Whoever they have operating their app is not competent. This app constantly malfunctions. The usability is complete garbage. There are long delays between clicking on an option and something happening. Often, the entire system does not work. Maintaining a subscription with an academic discount is a constant hassle requiring literal hours on the phone.

The usability of this app is terrible as others have noted. Today, a new problem: trying to swipe to read the paper in order is not possible. It takes you to some random article, instead of the next article. So you have to back out to the issue contents after every article. This is in addition to: unresponsiveness, slow loading of the issue contents every time, not remembering your past location (as you used to). The absolute worst Android application I've ever seen.

I have read the Economist for nearly 10 years, and I thoroughly enjoy and respect the journalism, but the apo UX is bad. The biggest problem is that if not finished with an article, when you close and reopen the app later, it refreshes, opens the landing screen, and your place in the article you were reading is lost! And worse - the article can no longer be found, since it has been replaced by new content on the landing screen. I have more complaints, but this is the worst issue I've found.
