good app it helped me alot
Great companion to the paper version.
This is a very decent French/English dictionary with a basic but attractive and functional interface. Both English and French keywords have phonetic transcriptions, which I find a very useful feature. The dictionary itself is okay to quickly check the meaning of words, but the phraseology reported is quite limited; it is the electronic version of the Collins French Dictionary and Grammar [6th edition (2010)], a medium-size paper dictionary (~20x13cm, 1152 pages). Alas, the grammatical section present in the paper dictionary is absent and the app reports very little or no grammatical information for French words (e.g., no indications on verb conjugation, even for irregular verbs). The interface is okay but it is not possible to search full text or phrases. All in all it is a perfectly fine app for light use (e.g., tourism, beginning students...).
I bought this app years ago and have been very happy with it (apart from the odd occasion when it lost all data) but I've just experienced the 'visual overhaul' which appears to be designed for children. How do I get back to a functional grown-up dictionary? I also see the in-app rating only allows five stars! - completely dishonest.
This app does not contain rare words. Nor does it translate slightly unusual words : you won't be able to translate all words on a single New York Times page, there is always something amiss. (Examples : caliper, cosset.)
