Smoothing skin erases pores and texture along with the blemishes, and you end up looking like a doll. GlowMe works the other way around: instead of erasing texture, it puts it back.
■ Retouching that keeps your skin texture
The photo is split into a low frequency layer (color, shading) and a high frequency layer (pores, fine hair, texture). Only the low layer is smoothed, then the high layer is laid back on top. Skin gets even without disappearing.
The number at the top of the editor shows how much of the original texture survived. In the 90s means it still looks like skin, and if it drops the app warns you before you save.
■ Photos never leave the device
Uploading is not merely switched off — no code in this app sends a photo anywhere. Face detection, skin analysis, makeup and hair coloring all run on your phone. The server receives an anonymous install number and which days the app was opened, nothing else. No sign-up, no login, no cloud account.

Eyes, nose, lips, teeth, cheeks and hair are located separately, so lip color goes on lips only and whitening on teeth only. Nothing is smeared across the face.
