面色是指面部的色澤。醫生用眼睛觀察面部色澤之變化，以診察疾病的方法稱為望面色。面色是面部的顏色，顏色從顏色科學的心理來分，可分解為三個因素：色調、明度、飽和度。色相當於色調，澤相當於明度，色澤之中又包含飽和度。從物理角度來分，色是可見光不同光譜分布的吸收與反射。在中醫學的理論創始時期，古代哲學即陰陽五行學說形成了中醫學的理論核心，古人以「青、赤、黃、白、黑」配屬「木、火、土、金、水」。因此，在中醫診斷中，也形成了「五色診」。《內經》所言：「夫精明五色者，氣之華也。」
