膽為六腑之一，又屬奇恆之腑。膽呈囊形，附於肝之短葉間，與肝相連。膽和肝有經脈相互絡屬，構成表裡關係。膽的主要生理功能是貯藏和排泄膽汁，以助飲食物的消化。此外，在臟象學說中還認為膽有「主決斷」的生理作用。膽汁生成於肝，朝鮮《東醫寶鑒》中說：「肝之餘氣，泄於膽，聚而成精。」其味苦，黃綠色，儲於膽，在消化食物過程中排泄，以助脾胃運化。由於膽汁來自肝臟，為清淨之液，故《內經》中稱：「膽者，中精之府。」膽汁是由肝的餘氣所化生，膽汁向腸中排泄，亦賴肝的疏泄功能所控制和調節。所以，膽汁的生成和排泄，與肝的疏泄功能密切相關。
