本所為建立符合人性化、國際化、有系統的親和性道路指示標誌，於96-98年度辦理3年期「研訂『道路指示標誌設置參考手冊』」研究案，彙整國內外相關規定及國內指示標誌設置方式，建立一套有系統的道路指示標誌設置參考手冊，作為工程司設置相關指示標誌之參考，且配合開發「指示標誌自動繪圖軟體」及「指示標誌輔助規劃軟體」，以電腦軟體產生標準指示標誌圖檔，並提供各道路主管機關規劃及佈設指示標誌之參考依據。 本計畫為推廣及擴大該研究案之成效，自99年起持續辦理2年期參考手冊及相關軟體之應用及推廣。本年期工作主要為蒐集及彙整手冊及軟體使用者之使用意見，並以問卷調查或專家學者訪談進行個案探討，進行手冊及相關軟體修正，使其更符合指示標誌實際規劃及設置需求。 本期計畫之主要成果包括：1.協助交通部「指示標誌改善工作小組」規劃各指示標誌改善內容；2.開發國內指示標誌適用之英數文字字體；3.初步規劃東西向快速公路台64線指示標誌改善作業。
