루이 브라유는 프랑스의 점자 발명가예요.
그는 세 살 때 송곳에 찔려 왼쪽 눈의 시력을 잃었고, 이후 오른쪽 눈의 시력까지 잃었어요. 브라유는 앞이 보이지 않았지만 성당에서 듣고 외우며 열심히 공부했어요.
브라유는 파리 왕립 시각 장애인 학교에 들어가면서 손으로 만져서 읽을 수 있는 ‘돋음 글자’로 된 책을 처음 접했지요. 이후 샤를 바르비에가 만든 ‘밤의 글자’를 개량하여 좀 더 편리한 점자를 만들기 시작해, 여섯 개의 점으로 표현할 수 있는 점자를 완성했어요. 이때 브라유의 나이는 열다섯 살이었어요.
1878년, 세계 시각 장애인 교육자 회의에서 브라유 점자를 공인하여 전 세계의 나라에서 쓰게 되었어요.
