마틴 루서 킹은 목사이자, 흑인 인권 운동가예요. 미국 조지아주에서 어린 시절부터 인종 차별을 겪고 자랐어요. 1954년에 몽고메리에서 덱스터 애비뉴 교회의 목사가 된 킹은 로자 파크스 사건을 계기로 ‘버스 타지 않기 운동’을 벌였어요. 경찰의 방해와 폭력단의 협박, 테러에도 운동을 계속하여 1956년 연방 법원에서 ‘흑백 인종 분리법’이 위헌이라는 판결을 받아 냈지요.
이후 킹은 흑인 인권 운동에 본격적으로 뛰어들었고 1963년, 전국에서 25만 명이 넘는 흑인들과 백인들이 워싱턴에 모여 ‘워싱턴 대행진’을 벌였습니다. 킹은 이 행진에서 “나에게는 꿈이 있습니다”라는 제목으로 유명한 연설을 남겼으며, 흑인 인권 운동에 힘쓴 공로를 인정받아 노벨 평화상을 받았어요.
