뒤에서 내 이름을 외치는 소리가 들려도 멈춰 서지 않았다.
그저 조금이라도 더 빨리 머리끝까지 물에 잠겨 숨을 거두길 바랄 뿐이었다. 살아봤자 죽는 게 두려워 상전이 시키는 대로만 하는 세월을 버텨야 했다. 그럴 바에야 다음 생이 있을 거란 기대를 품고 죽는 게 구차하지 않았다. 첨벙거리는 소리에 이어 큼지막한 손이 겨드랑이 사이로 들어왔다.
“이게 무슨 짓이야? 네가 왜 죽어? 그놈은 뻔뻔하게 혼례를 올리는데 죽긴 네가 왜 죽어!”
나처럼 머슴인 대팔이 있는 힘껏 나를 뒤로 당겼다.
“으아아악! 내버려 둬!”
힘껏 몸부림을 치자 물결이 출렁거렸다.
어느 것 하나 가질 수 없는 노비 주제에 상전인 상욱을 연모한 게 잘못이었다.
