Le mucinosi cutanee sono un insieme complesso ed eterogeneo di malattie dermatologiche in cui si osserva un deposito patologico di mucina nel derma o nei follicoli piliferi. La mucina è una sostanza gelatinosa, amorfa, altamente igroscopica, costituita da una mistura di glicosaminoglicani acidi, il cui componente più importante nella cute è l’acido ialuronico con piccole quantità di dermatan solfato e condroitin-4-solfato. La mucina è una normale componente della matrice extracellulare dermica, normalmente prodotta in piccole quantità dai fibroblasti, che ha importanti funzioni fisiologiche quali mantenere l’equilibrio idro-salino del derma.
