आपल्या बाळपणापासून शिवा त्या गारवेलाचा संसार बघत आला होता. एवढी दांडगी, डेरेदार चिंच गारवेलानं निम्मी झाकली होती. वर्षानुवर्ष भरतकाम करावं तसे टाके घालीत बसला होता. दरसाल आपलं जाळं विणतच होता. बघावं तिकडं सगळीकडं त्या झाडावर ती हिरवी वेलबुट्टी आणि फुलं दिसत होती. किती पावसाळे आणि किती उन्हाळे त्यानं पाहिले होते! किती वादळांशी झोंबी घेतली होती! गरजणाऱ्या वळवानं झोडलं, झंझावातानं झिंजाडून विस्कटून बघितलं; पण आजवर त्यानं कधी कुणाला दाद दिली नव्हती, नमतं घेतलं नव्हतं. असा हा एवढा जिद्दीचा गडी, पण लागोपाठ पडलेल्या या तीन वर्षाच्या दुष्काळात डेंगला होता. त्याची सगळी रयाच गेली होती. यंदाच्या ह्या उन्हाळ्यात तर अंगावर एक हिरवं पान नव्हतं - मग फूल कुठलं? नुसत्या जाळ्या राहिल्या होत्या. त्याही वाळून पळकाट्या झाल्यागत दिसत होत्या. तरी तग धरली होती. एवढा उन्हाळा पार झाला असता म्हणजे त्याला डग नव्हता. पुन्हा टाके घालत बसला असता. ती हिरवी जरतार खुलली असती. पण जगाहर्त अशा ह्या दुष्काळानं त्यालाही नाक घासायला लावलं. ना वादळ, ना वारा. एकाएकी कोसळला बाबा. संपला त्याचा शेर! ती म्हातारी चिंचसुध्दा गदगदली. हे काय झालं, म्हणून ओणवी होऊन बघत राहिली.
