About this ebook

Dorian Benoit is no stranger to adversity, but even growing up gay wasn’t enough to prepare him for the troubles that his telekinetic powers would bring.

Not long after Dorian moves out on his own, an unnatural affliction starts to take hold of the locals, turning his chances at a new life into a hellish nightmare. He soon finds himself in a fight for survival against the ones responsible who have taken an interest in using his powers to further their sinister cause. A world unseen by mortal eyes for centuries is about to make its cataclysmic return with Dorian caught in the middle.

The Immortal Coil series is a high-stakes journey of self-discovery as Dorian Benoit ascends from reluctant hero to demon-slaying savior. Inspired by mythology and folklore, it explores the familiar tones of urban fantasy to the unfathomable reaches of cosmic horror with a character-driven storyline that abolishes token stereotypes. Each sequel ups the ante as a diverse supernatural cast struggles to contain the apocalyptic events set in motion by the mysterious entities attempting to unravel modern civilization and beyond.

An Immortal Perspective

As an avid fan of fantasy fiction grounded in real life scenarios, I purchased this book after reading the intriguing introductory. After digesting the material over a rather quiet weekend, I can easily attest that it’s one of the better novels I’ve read this year. The author has a rather distinct voice that allows the story, through first-person, to vividly illustrate itself within my mind and demand a suspension of disbelief that is rather rare in most novels. The tale itself has a multidimensional protagonist that stands out from the many caricatures that plague this genre. His traverse through the story is an arc of growth that grounds him in reality despite the capabilities that he possessed. Also, my favorite character, Noah, is at once a divisive individual and a gravitating sort that lights up every scene that he’s in. I was captivated by the myriad action sequences as well; especially the eerie and descriptive run through the hallways with Rozalin cackling and chasing Dorian as he moved forward. The stunning scene between Dorian and Noah against Minerva was definitely a highlight of the book, filled with supernatural intervention and demonic references. In noting that, an entertaining aspect of this novel is the seamless integration of otherworldly creatures, magical activities, and the foreshadowing of secret societies at war; how the author held it all together is a testament to his abilities as a masterful storyteller. In summary, if anyone else is looking for a truly stellar novel that will keep you entertained throughout, this one will definitely satiate your desires. As for me, I’m already jumping right into Shadows of Humanity, the second part of this series. Based on this first book, I’ve no doubt that it’s going to be a blast.

Okay, folks, this week’s review might go a bit off the rails because… hot frickety-frick-frack this is good stuff. I’d seen J. Armand’s book babies floating around the Twitterverse for a while thanks to his involvement in #writeLGBTQ, and I was positively champing at the bit to get my hands on them. So when we connected and scheduled him for a review on my blog several months ago? I was doing a butt-wiggle dance all up in my #amwriting nest. And let me tell ya, my lovely ladies, gents, and NBs… The Immortal Coil did not disappoint. I’m not even sure where to begin with this review. I’ve admitted more than once before that, prior to opening my blog to all LGBTQ+ works of novel/novella length fiction, I was primarily a romance-only reader. I didn’t venture into other genres unless I was ordered to do so by an English teacher trying to “expand my readerly horizons.” However, I’ve discovered a rich patchwork of beauty within genres I never would’ve chosen to read before, this read being a perfect example. I was floored by the sheer number of awe-inspiring avenues this story traveled down. It took me on an intricately weaved adventure truly owning the multiple genre tag of urban fantasy, dark fantasy, and science fiction. But rather than being overwhelming or feeling meshed together and shoehorned in, each nuance and subplot only added to the gorgeous world Mr. Armand created. Every chapter drew me further into the characters and the never-ending twists and turns that had me wide-eyed and anxious to turn the page. I’m not going to go into any detail about the plot, because I think with this particular read, you can get all you need from the blurb and anything more than that would be an injustice. I want each and every one of you to experience this story for yourselves, without any added description or unnecessary details from me. I can’t think of any specific audience I’d recommend this to, aside from those who enjoy the genres. Because, honestly, I’d recommend this to anyone with a pulse who even mildly enjoys reading. I have faith anyone who picks this up will be exactly where I’ve found myself… desperate to start book two.

A great mixture of a post-apocalyptic world and supernatural rolled into one (my two favorite genres). I really enjoyed Dorian's character and actually liked the fact that he was gay, unlike some other reviews I've read. I think he was very relatable, his actions and choices are some I could find myself making and aren't too far fetched like they can get in similar books with a lot of action. A great mixture of devious vampires and humans! Really enjoyed this.

About the author

J. Armand is an American novelist. His interest in both literature and the supernatural stem from his childhood when he would enjoy reading about superheroes and mythology. It wasn't until several life-changing events that he decided to do what he loves and chase his dream to become an author.

His writing style includes all the heart-pounding action of a dark superhero tale mixed with unique symbolism to reflect events and themes in the real world through various perspectives. The Immortal Coil series was written with the intent to show how history truly does repeat itself and even though we are all different, it does not mean we have to be alone.
