As creator of the Paris National Guard, Lafayette designed its uniform and a French flag with the colors of Paris and the United States. He led a great fete marking the French Revolutions first year in the Champ de Mars, later scene of many deaths for which he was unfairly blamed.

Donald Miller, a Pittsburgh native, earned bachelor and master degrees in art history at the University of Pittsburgh. He was employed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for forty-three years, retiring as a senior editor. He lives in Naples, Florida, with his wife, artist Bette W. Miller. He writes for the Naples Daily News and other publications.
