About this ebook

She’s seeking shelter. He’s hardened his heart. His cat just wants chin rubs.

Lucinda Thomalin fears for her life. Clueless why she’s being followed through London on this icy, storm-ravaged night, the unemployed companion barrels toward the only lit store and the safety it promises. Mistaking her for a strumpet, the shopkeeper orders her back outside—into the freezing rain.

Sleet is nothing compared to Brier Chapman’s frozen heart. When a drenched tart blasts into his closed mercantile, he just wants the stubborn chit gone—until he realizes she’s injured and this well-spoken spitfire is certainly no tart. Not to mention, his cat wants her to stay, but soon Brier’s chest is aching at the thaw…

How can lust turn to love so quickly, especially when Brier knows she’s destined to leave?

A determined woman. A dogged widower. One superior cat.

I enjoyed Brier and Lucinda. The unexpected meeting, finding themselves attracted, learning about each other, and Barnabas the cat's involvement all made for an enjoyable romance. There were some paranormal elements that I usually enjoy. In this story, it was fun having Barnabus's take on things and his conversations with Brier. There was also a creature with glowing eyes that propelled Lucinda into flight in the beginning that was never really explained, and I felt like I was missing part of the story. He was referred to several times and at the end seemed to be identified as a friend and I was a little confused. Maybe understanding that requires reading other books in this series, which I haven't done. I received an advance review copy for free and am voluntarily leaving this review.

Absolutely loved how this book tied into the previous series, however lightly the connection was. I hope that this leads to a continuation of Brier's siblings stories. I received a complimentary copy of this book via Book Sirens and am leaving this review of my own volition.

Don't be confused, this novella starts with a cat named Barnabas' point of view(POV) and continues off and on through the story. It's before Christmas on a dark stormy night and Lucinda Thomalin has been in a terrible coaching accident. Fearing for her life, she falls into the establishment of Brier Chapman, Chapman and Sons, Hats and Hosiery, Gloves and Goods. Thinking she is a woman of self trade, he quickly notices her refined speech and the one time quality of her clothes. His cat's approval is high marks. For a lonely widower and an unemployed Lady's companion, the weather plays in their favor as they share their thoughts and feelings and hopes for the future. Not exactly a clean romance. I voluntarily read and reviewed a free copy of this book.
